Clarimed Launches First-of-Its-Kind Healthcare Rating Agency and Information Reference Site

MIT Bioengineer Founds Company to Meet Immediate Need for Objective Assessment and Rating of Healthcare Products and Services, Harnessing Patient-Friendly Information and Peer Reviews

SANTA CLARA, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 27, 2011) - Health 2.0 Conference -- Clarimed (, the first healthcare rating agency, including in-depth, independent healthcare information and reference, is announcing the launch of its online service, featuring fact-based analytical insights into medical devices, diseases, procedures and manufacturers. Founded by MIT bioengineer and McKinsey & Co. veteran Nora Iluri, Ph.D., Clarimed represents the first independent rating agency for healthcare, and, specifically, for medical devices, meeting the need for healthcare information in the gap that exists between scientific portals and medical websites for consumers that cater to fear, uncertainty and doubt.

Most other industries with complicated products, such as automobiles and mutual funds, have successfully launched rating agencies (e.g. JD Powers and Morningstar, respectively) that provide information on products and services as well as ratings to help inform consumers, professionals and institutions. With healthcare lacking such an independent and objective entity, consumers, physicians, purchasing organizations and payers often base their decisions on brand names rather than quality and performance. On the innovation side, without a transparent ratings entity for healthcare products, manufacturers also have less incentive to risk going through another round of FDA approvals for improvements that individual consumers and buyers cannot perceive. While there are some websites that aim to rate providers, there has yet to be a site that rates medical products.

Clarimed's CEO & founder Dr. Nora Iluri is a successful entrepreneur who sold her last start-up company Zoragen, a molecular diagnostics company for prenatal screening and cancer diagnostics.

"Clarimed's mission is to provide well-organized, consumer-focused information, in addition to product ratings and other user experiences and opinions. At a fundamental level, Clarimed will bring transparency to the healthcare market, enabling users to make better healthcare decisions," said Dr. Nora Iluri, founder and CEO of Clarimed.
