Claritin® Canada and Evergreen Campaign Funds Children's Food Garden at Evergreen Brick Works

Claritin® Canada and Evergreen's Pedal for a Greener City, last spring's month-long campaign in support of urban green projects at Evergreen Brick Works, has raised $25,000 for the "Valley Veggie Patch," a community food garden located on the site. The garden was selected as the winning project by Torontonians who voted for one of three projects proposed on the site.

Voters were gathered from downtown pedestrians who took advantage of free rides on 12 EcoCabs sponsored by Claritin® Canada for one week in May. Each of the pedal-powered cabs was equipped with a digital screen where riders accessed Claritin® Canada's Facebook page and voted for their favourite project. Claritin® Canada donated $1 for every kilometre clocked on every EcoCab throughout the campaign up to a maximum of $5,000 for 5,000 km pedaled. In addition to this, Claritin® Canada donated $1 for every new Claritin Facebook fan, and Torontonians also contributed by giving their own donation when intercepted by our Claritin® squad.

The $25,000 investment is being used to cover materials and supplies to ensure the success of the garden through 2014. This includes plants, fruit trees, seeds, soil, mulch and compost, tools, maintenance supplies and volunteer support.

The "Valley Veggie Patch" contains a variety of raised beds and containers including herbs, fruit trees and vegetables planted throughout Chimney Court, Evergreen Brick Works' children's area. This year, Evergreen will harvest approximately 100 lbs. of tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, beans, garlic, and a variety of greens. The harvest has already been used in community programs and to promote sustainable food education and healthy food choices.
