Claude Bechard, a Model of Determination for the Canadian Francophonie

FREDERICTON, NEW BRUNSWICK--(Marketwire - Sept. 9, 2010) - The Ministerial Conference on the Canadian Francophonie wishes to acknowledge the contribution of Claude Béchard to the development of the Canadian Francophonie.

Mr. Béchard joined the Ministerial Conference on the Canadian Francophonie in 2009 upon his appointment as Minister responsible for Canadian Intergovernmental Affairs and the Canadian Francophonie. His involvement with the Conference was particularly significant with respect to the place of French at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic and Paralympic Games as he fervently defended its importance during the annual ministers' meeting in September 2009.

"His determination and drive, coupled with a sense of humour, characterized his time on our forum and inspired the many Francophones throughout the country whom he had the opportunity to meet," said Jackson Lafferty, Northwest Territories Minister of Education, Culture and Employment and co-chair of the Ministerial Conference on the Canadian Francophonie.

Mr. Béchard will be remembered not only for his dedication to the Canadian Francophonie and for his political will, but also for his exemplary courage in the face of adversity. In this regard he has been an example to all Canadians.

Created in 1994, the Ministerial Conference on the Canadian Francophonie is the only intergovernmental forum that is made up of ministers responsible for the Canadian Francophonie. The Conference works for an open, dynamic and diverse Francophonie that contributes to and participates fully in the growth of Canadian society.
