Claude Majeau Appointed to the Copyright Board Canada

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Aug. 5, 2009) - The Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry, today announced the appointment of Mr. Claude Majeau as the Vice-Chairman and CEO of the Copyright Board Canada.

"I am pleased to welcome Mr. Majeau to the Copyright Board Canada," said Minister Clement. "His experience and knowledge in the area of communications will remain a great asset to the Board as it continues to oversee the administration of royalties and licences relating to copyrighted material."

Since 1993, Mr. Majeau has occupied the position of Secretary General of the Copyright Board Canada. Before joining the Board, he worked for the Department of Communications of Canada from 1987 to 1993 as Director (Communications and Culture) for the Quebec Region. From 1984 to 1987, he was Chief of Staff to the Deputy Minister of the same department. Before 1987, he occupied various positions dealing with cultural industries and public policy.

Mr. Majeau earned an LL.B. from the Universite du Quebec a Montreal in 1977 and has been a member of the Barreau du Quebec since 1979.

Founded on February 1, 1989, the Copyright Board Canada is the regulatory body that establishes the royalties to be paid for the use of copyrighted works. The Board promotes fair and reasonable tariffs for both copyright owners and users of copyright-protected works. It also issues non-exclusive licences authorizing the use of published works when the copyright owner cannot be located.
