ClearForest Announces Winners of the 2006 Semantic Web Services Mashup Competition

WALTHAM, MA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- December 18, 2006 -- ClearForest, the world leader in business solutions enabled by text analytics, today announced the winners of its 2006 Semantic Web Services (SWS) Mashup Competition. With the release of ClearForest's SWS platform in October 2006, ClearForest launched a mashup developer competition to promote creative and innovative uses of real time semantic web processing that demonstrate the value of machine-readable news.

A wide range of exceptionally creative entries were received and the following innovative mashups were revealed as winners of the 2006 competition:

First Place: News Tracker

News Tracker is a creative implementation of a new paradigm in news reading -- entity based navigation. News Tracker allows you to not only read the news, but to navigate the news content by person, place, organization, company and a range of other elements. News Tracker's entity cloud provides a quick overview of the news and allows you to quickly drill down to those items of interest to you. News Tracker is available at

Second Place: Hype-List

An elegant interface combined with a simple focus on one thing: Who's hot today? Hype-list finds the people within entertainment, business and sports news and presents the hot names in an appealing and functionally simple interface. Don't have much time? Just want to know what's happening? Hype-list delivers the facts fast. Hype-list is available at

Third Place: Newsmakers of the Day (NOT'd)

And now, in a completely different paradigm, we have Newsmakers of the Day. Newsmakers of the Day is a simple and elegant plug-in for Google Calendar. NOT'd places an unobtrusive icon at the top of each day's calendar. With one simple click you get a quick snapshot of people, companies, products and locations in the news. Clicking on any of these gives you the opportunity to see more and drill down to the original news article. NOT'd is available at

Honorable Mentions

As with any competition, there are a number of additional entrants whose work we'd like to acknowledge:

-- Six Degrees ( is an interesting experiment in finding the networks that link people, companies and other items together.

-- Compare & Contrast ( is a project by Northwestern University's InfoLab that finds similar stories with different entities.

-- Semantic Searcher ( provides a visually appealing snapshot of top stories by entity type.

-- PowerRSS ( adds the power of semantic processing to RSS feeds.

-- HyperSearch ( is an excellent prototype of a semantic search engine that takes search beyond the simple keyword.

ClearForest commends all entrants in their 2006 SWS mashup competition. The creativity, quality of thinking, and innovation has been truly impressive. ClearForest provides production strength semantic processing of news, corporate filings, patents and a host of other types of textual information to leading organizations throughout the world.
