Closing the Gay Generation Gap

Dr. Perry Halkitis Is Getting the Word Out to Bring Generations Together to Learn From the Past

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Mar 24, 2014) -  Perry N. Halkitis, Author of The AIDS Generation: Stories of Survival and Resilience, recognizes the gap between younger and older generations of gay men, and hopes to bring both generations together and to facilitate discussions across gay men of all ages to fight the AIDS epidemic.

In the gay community, it is a rarity to see younger and older generations unify as one. As a result, this separates the generations, forming an artificial divide that is continually growing. Older generations falsely believe that younger gay men do not fear HIV/AIDS. Younger generations incorrectly perceive that older gay men do not hear their voices. If the young and old could join together, they might just find that their combined forces are stronger than apart.

"I now realize that support and mentorship at an intergenerational level is a gift that only a few hold. I treasure the support, guidance and insights that I receive from my mentors, including my professor Perry and Sean McKenna, one of the men depicted in Perry's book, The AIDS Generation: Stories of Survival and Resilience. Their experiences, including those during the darkest moments of the AIDS epidemic, have allowed me to contextualize my own life in this current place and time, some 33 years after the initial diagnoses of AIDS in the U.S." - Charles Ferrusi, student of Dr. Halkitis at NYU.

Perry Halkitis, Ph.D., M.S., MPH is a Professor of Applied Psychology and Public Health (Steinhardt School), and Population Health (Langone School of Medicine). He specializes in AIDS/HIV behavioral research studies for gay men, prevention of drug abuse and addiction in the gay community and helps HIV and long-term survivors.

As one of the leading authorities on HIV prevention, Dr. Halkitis' ever-evolving research focuses on some of the most difficult, intractable obstacles facing HIV prevention today: the complex interplay of drug use, mental health, societal/personal issues and risk behaviors.
