Cloudera's Doug Cutting Named Innovator of the Year by MediaGuardian

MediaGuardian Recognizes Apache Hadoop Creator With Top Honor for Hadoop Invention

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwire - March 24, 2011) - Cloudera, the leading provider of Apache Hadoop-based data management software and services, today announced that Doug Cutting is being recognized by MediaGuardian as the "Innovator of the Year."

The MediaGuardian Innovation Awards 2011 (Megas), which are now in their fourth year, acknowledge the brightest and best across the media and new media landscapes. Doug Cutting is recognized with the top honor of Innovator of the Year. This honor is awarded to the figure considered to have had the greatest impact on innovation in the media in the past year. Judges chose Cutting for the key technological role he played in the invention and development of Hadoop, the Apache project that helps users make sense of massive amounts of data.

"Apache Hadoop pushes data management forward by empowering enterprises to make sense of their increasingly large and diverse collections of data," said Doug Cutting, creator of Hadoop and chief architect at Cloudera. "It is great to see the continued recognition for the technology and I am happy to accept the MediaGuardian Innovator of the Year award on behalf of the flourishing Apache community."

"This year's entries reflected the way that new technology is feeding creative content and vice versa," said Aleks Krotoski, host of Guardian's Tech Weekly podcast and Megas judge. "The judges looked at a huge range of different entries; some were heavy, data driven technical websites while others were light and fun -- but all shared a common sense that only through innovation can we make a digital future attractive to the public."

Cloudera provides software, support, professional services, training and certification for the Apache Hadoop open source software package. Cloudera's Distribution including Apache Hadoop (CDH) is the most comprehensive and broadly adopted Hadoop-based platform on the market, and lowers the barrier to Hadoop adoption by making it simple to install and easy to integrate into the data center. CDH is 100% Apache licensed and freely available for download. Battle hardened for the enterprise, it consists of core Apache Hadoop and eight additional open source projects, all tested and integrated into a single platform, making it the most complete Hadoop-based distribution available today. For more information, visit http://www.cloudera.com/hadoop/.
