Cloudinary Introduces Intelligent Responsive Image Breakpoints Solution

Free Open Source Tool Powered by Cloudinary's Advanced API Enables Developers to Automatically Optimize Image Resolution Selection, Save Bandwidth and Improve User Experience

PALO ALTO, CA--(Marketwired - Jan 26, 2016) - Cloudinary today announced enhancements to its cloud-based image management APIs. These additions address challenges developers face when trying to determine the image dimensions that best fit their responsive website designs. Cloudinary's responsive image breakpoints technology helps developers automatically find the optimal image sizes needed for the best viewing experience in web and mobile apps on a variety of screen sizes. In addition, developers can interactively analyze their images using Cloudinary's free Responsive Breakpoints Generator tool that leverages Cloudinary's industry-leading cloud-based image management service.

"Web developers have long been frustrated with managing images for responsive web designs. Either they deliver the largest size image for all resolutions, wasting bandwidth and slowing page loads that negatively impact user experience; or they end up unnecessarily creating dozens, or even hundreds, of different image versions to ensure they have the right image sizes for their websites," said Nadav Soferman, co-founder and chief product officer at Cloudinary. "Cloudinary's Responsive Breakpoints solution enable developers to automatically select breakpoints for their images by analyzing each high-resolution image and determining the best dimensions for responsive website designs. The technology intelligently selects only the scaled down versions that significantly reduce the file size, which ultimately improves user experience and reduces costs."

The open source tool enables web developers to experience first-hand the functionality of Cloudinary's new set of APIs. The tool allows quick and easy generation of best matching breakpoints for each image uploaded, based on given thresholds, as well as optional multiple aspect ratio adaptations and retina display customizations. The concept behind the solution is to find image width values that offer significant reduction in file size. Cloudinary's algorithms analyze the images to find the best breakpoints, rather than creating all possible image resolutions, and enables developers to easily create modern "picture" and "img" HTML5 elements based on the calculated breakpoints.

Cloudinary's customers now have the responsive image breakpoints generation capabilities available via an API, enabling them to automatically generate breakpoints for each image format -- JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP -- either in the original format or a different format specified in image transformation settings. The various images can be used in conjunction with their existing image workflow managed by Cloudinary -- uploading them to the cloud, manipulating them on the fly to fit any graphic design and quickly delivering them optimized via a fast content delivery network.

"Cloudinary's tool is the first one I've used that takes the guesswork out of picking responsive image breakpoints," said Jason Grigsby, co-founder, Cloud Four. "Rather than picking them arbitrarily, Cloudinary enables you to set your performance budget and range of image sizes, and the tool automatically optimizes your image."
