Cloudmark and Return Path Partner to Help Permissioned Email Get Through to Subscribers' Inboxes

Cloudmark Utilizes Return Path Sender Score Certified Technology to Help Reduce False Positives and Ensure That Legitimate Emails Get Delivered

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwire - September 10, 2007) - Cloudmark, Inc., the global leader in carrier-grade messaging security, and Return Path, an email performance management company, today announced that the two companies are working together in a worldwide initiative to improve overall email filtering accuracy for Internet service providers. Cloudmark is integrating reputation data from Return Path's Sender Score Certified program as one of several data components used in its backend processing system to further ensure that permissioned emails, such as subscribed newsletters, get delivered correctly to recipients' inboxes.

Cloudmark's intelligent filtering solutions -- leveraging Advanced Message Fingerprinting™ technology based on innovative, high-performance algorithms and real-time, corroborated feedback from the Cloudmark Global Threat Network comprised of reporters in more than 163 countries -- blocks spam, phishing and viruses with greater than 98 percent accuracy while also generating near zero false positives. This industry-leading accuracy makes Cloudmark the preferred messaging security solution for more than 80 of the world's largest service provider and mobile operator networks, including EarthLink, Comcast, Cablevision, Charter Communications, Cox Communications, NTT Communications, SprintNextel, Virgin Mobile and Swisscom. Cloudmark currently protects more than 200 million mailboxes around the globe.

Together, Cloudmark and Return Path are helping ISPs improve customer satisfaction by making certain that permissioned emails, such as opt-in marketing messages, almost always reach subscribers' inboxes, further reducing incidences of false positives. As a result, service providers can expect fewer complaints from customers and marketers about messages that should have been received, thereby freeing up valuable operational resources. In addition, by addressing both the false negative and false positive aspects of the accuracy spectrum -- stopping all unwanted mail while ensuring that legitimate messages are delivered promptly to subscribers -- Cloudmark, together with Return Path, is helping ISPs achieve the highest level of accuracy without any compromise. The joint solution already has produced remarkable results in the United States and positive results are now available from users in Europe and Asia as well.

"Service providers choose Cloudmark both for our high filtering accuracy and low false positive rate," said Jacinta Tobin, vice president, Worldwide Sales and Business Development at Cloudmark. "This partnership with Return Path demonstrates Cloudmark's continued commitment to providing ISPs with the lowest possible false positive rate, while also helping to work with the industry to encourage legitimate senders to follow the latest best practices."

Sender Score Certified aggressively combats the spam problem by providing the most trusted whitelist for email receivers to identify legitimate mailers. Sender Score works with both the sending and receiving communities to bring more transparent standards to email delivery and filtering. The Sender Score Certified whitelist, developed using detailed IP-based reputation data, gives email receivers an objective way to ensure that only unwanted messages get blocked and gives marketers a way to warrant the quality of the email they send to the ISP community, thereby helping to make sure that their emails are delivered. Sender Score's email reputation data is completely language agnostic, making it a truly global solution, and senders certified by Return Path are required to maintain high quality email programs and adhere to strict standards in order to remain in the program. Today, the Sender Score Certified list is used by Hotmail, MSN, Road Runner and more than 800 million email boxes as a major determinant of legitimate email versus spam.

"Industry sources have long maintained that sender reputation and not the actual content of emails or filtering rules should determine whether or not commercial emails reach the inbox or are blocked," said Ken Takahashi, vice president, Corporate and International Development at Return Path. "By certifying legitimate emails based on comprehensive sender reputation data, Return Path is able to help Cloudmark and its ISP customers more accurately identify emails that consumers want to receive and increase the chances that those emails make it to subscribers' inboxes. We're thrilled to see Cloudmark take a holistic approach to email protection by implementing not only industry-leading technology to block and filter spam, but also by ensuring that properly permissioned email from high-reputation senders gets delivered correctly."
