CMHC Reports April Housing Starts Up in Windsor

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - May 9, 2011) - New home starts were up in April in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) according to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Builders laid foundations for 48 residential units compared to 45 units in April 2010.

"Windsor was one of the few markets in Ontario to post stronger housing starts in April" said Margot Stevenson, Market Analyst for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "Improved employment in 2010 and relatively low mortgage rates translated into higher starts in early 2010," added Stevenson.

Starts in the Windsor area included 32 single-detached homes and 16 townhomes in April. Year-to-date, builders started 73 single-detached homes, four semi-detached homes and 50 townhomes in the Windsor CMA, up nine per cent from the same period in 2010.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 60 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
