CMHC Reports Home Starts Lower in January

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 8, 2011) - Builders started just 67 new homes in the Hamilton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) last month, according to preliminary housing starts data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Starts were down as compared to recent months, but were not unusually low for this time of the year. The majority of the homes were started in the City of Hamilton. Nearly all of the homes started last month were single-detached homes.

"There were fewer starts of townhouses last month which led to lower total starts," said Sarah Fong, CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for Hamilton and Brantford. "Also, January also tends to be one of the slowest months of the year for new home starts," added Fong.
