CMHC Reports June Housing Starts Higher in Windsor

WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 11, 2011) - New home starts were up in June in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area(1) (CMA) according to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Builders laid foundations for 85 residential units compared to 74 units in June 2010.

"An increase in higher-density starts contributed to the overall gain," said Margot Stevenson, Market Analyst for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "This has contributed to the strongest first half for residential construction since 2007," added Stevenson.

June starts in the Windsor area included 64 single-detached homes, six semi-detached homes, 11 townhomes and four apartments. Year-to-date, builders started 176 single-detached homes, 12 semi-detached homes, 69 townhomes and eight apartments in the Windsor CMA, up three per cent from the same period in 2010.

As Canada's national housing agency, CMHC draws on more than 65 years of experience to help Canadians access a variety of quality, environmentally sustainable and affordable homes. CMHC also provides reliable, impartial and up-to-date housing market reports, analysis and knowledge to support and assist consumers and the housing industry in making vital decisions.
