WINDSOR, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 8, 2011) - New home starts were down in October in the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area1 (CMA) according to preliminary data released today by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). Builders laid foundations for 55 homes compared to 61 in October 2010.
"While October starts were down, starts in the Windsor CMA so far in 2011 are still above the starts through October in 2010," said Paul Tessaro, Market Analyst for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. "A large factor in this growth is the townhome starts in Windsor City. Higher demand for this type of housing likely reflects the success of the initiative to attract retirees. It also reflects the tastes of some first-time buyers in Windsor City," added Tessaro.
October starts in the Windsor area included 28 single-detached homes, 18 semi-detached homes and nine townhomes. Year-to-date, builders started 364 single-detached homes, 62 semi-detached homes, 105 townhomes and eight apartments in the Windsor CMA, up 11 per cent from the same time in 2010.
