CMHC Says 2010 Home Starts Double

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 11, 2011) - Preliminary data released today by CMHC show that there were 178 new home starts last month in the Hamilton Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). While total starts fell as compared to a year ago, single-detached starts were on the rise. Builders broke ground for 142 single-detached homes last month, up more than 50 per cent as compared to the same month a year ago. Most of these single-detached homes were started in the City of Hamilton.

For the 2010 year as a whole, new home starts nearly doubled to over 3,500 starts. There were more starts of all home types, with single-detached homes and townhouses leading the new home market.

"Starts were lower in December than all previous months of this year," said CMHC's Senior Market Analyst for Hamilton and Brantford. "This reflects the cooling of the market following a stronger-than-expected recovery," added Fong.
