MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - June 6, 2012) - CML HealthCare Inc. (TSX:CLC) (the "Company" or "CML"), Canada's largest community-based medical diagnostic services provider, today announced its sponsorship of the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada ("CCAC"). Founded in 1998 the CCAC is Canada's leading non-profit, colorectal cancer patient association. Its mission is to raise the awareness of and educate the public on colorectal cancer, provide support to patients and their families, and advocate on their behalf.
"We are extremely proud to partner with CML and we look forward to working closely with the Company to increase awareness of a disease that is preventable, treatable and beatable," said Barry D. Stein, president of the CCAC. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Canada. It is preventable and 90% curable if caught in its early stages. "This year approximately 23,300 Canadians (13,000 men and 10,300 women) will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and sadly, about 9,200 people (5,000 men and 4,200 women) will succumb to it. On average, 448 Canadians will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer every week, and 176 will die from the disease every week. But colorectal cancer is preventable and treatable if the disease is caught early," said Mr. Stein "There is compelling evidence that healthy lifestyles through a well-managed diet and regular physical activity may not only prevent the disease, but also decrease the risk of disease recurrence as well," Stein added.
"Primary prevention and early detection of the disease are key factors to reducing the incidence of colorectal cancer. To encourage increased activity among our employees and raise funds for CCAC, CML will be launching a six-week Walk for a Better End Challenge across our network, beginning June 7, 2012," said Thomas Wellner, President and Chief Executive Officer of CML. "Whether you are a business partner of CML, a family member, co-worker or friend, we hope that you will join us in promoting awareness of colorectal cancer and at the same time improve your own health by participating in this challenge and going for long walks, bike rides, or by doing any physical activity that you may enjoy on a regular basis. As well, if you are between the ages of 50-74 remember to act on the recommendation of your doctor and take the recommended screening test for colorectal cancer."
