MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - April 11 2006) - The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation has recently awarded approximately 9,000 Canadian students a total of $25 million in the form of bursaries and scholarships. For the first time in its history, the Foundation has simultaneously distributed awards in each of four different areas.

The awards announced today are as follows:

Millennium Access Bursaries 885 $907,222

----------------------------------------------------
Millennium Grants 130 $325,000
----------------------------------------------------
Total: 9,020 $25,693,564

"Each initiative was designed to correspond to a particular need," said the Foundation's executive director and chief executive officer Norman Riddell. "The Foundation is pleased to have different options to encourage Canadian students to access post-secondary education."

The millennium bursaries are awarded on the basis of a student's financial need, while the millennium access bursaries target students from low-income families. Both are administered in cooperation with provincial and territorial governments, and are distributed accordingly. Millennium excellence awards are delivered to students who are distinguished by their community involvement, creative leadership and academic excellence. Finally, millennium grants allow students who have already received an excellence award to acquire practical experience in developing a project to benefit their community.

The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation is a private, independent organization created by an act of Parliament in 1998. It encourages Canadian students to strive for excellence and pursue their post-secondary studies. The Foundation distributes $340 million in the form of bursaries and scholarships each year. Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded 635,000 bursaries, with a total value of close to $2 billion, to Canadian post-secondary students.
