CMSF: Academic Excellence, Community Involvement and Innovative Thinking Recognized Throughout Canada

MONTREAL, QUEBEC--(CCNMatthews - June 1, 2006) - More than 1,000 Canadians have received a prestigious excellence award from the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation, in recognition of their community involvement, demonstrated leadership qualities and interest in innovation, as well as their academic achievements.

"The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation is very proud to salute the 2006 entrance award recipients and looks forward to celebrating their continued achievements," said Gerard Veilleux, chair of the Foundation's Board of Directors. "They represent our country's future."

Selected from more than 9,000 applicants, this year's 1,051 entrance award winners were recommended by regional committees of volunteer assessors and subsequently approved by the Foundation's Board of Directors.

There are three levels of entrance awards:

- National - 100 awards of $5,000, renewable for up to three
additional years, to a maximum of $20,000.

- Provincial/Territorial - 240 awards of $4,000, also renewable for
up to three additional years, to a maximum of $16,000.

- Local - 711 one-time awards of $4,000.

"An investment in the education of these outstanding citizens is an investment in the betterment of Canadian society," said Norman Riddell, executive director and CEO of the Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation. "These individuals have the potential to assume leadership positions in all walks of life. The Foundation is pleased to recognize their past successes, but above all is proud to help them reach their future goals."

Local and regional awards are distributed in each province and territory based on their share of the Canadian population, while national awards are allocated to the most exceptional applicants across the country, regardless of provincial and territorial quotas.
