CN supports the federal government's Pacific Gateway Strategy, a welcome investment to improve Canada's competitiveness

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 21, 2005) - CN welcomes today's announcement of a new Pacific Gateway Strategy designed to strengthen Canada's position in international commerce, and the competitiveness of Canada's Pacific gateway ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert.

"This is great news for Canada and for the country's competitiveness in world markets," said Peter Marshall, CN vice-president, Western Canada Region. "Both Vancouver and Prince Rupert are vital gateways for freight traffic moving between Asia and North America, and stand to play even greater roles in international markets in the years ahead. This new strategy will enhance CN's network that connects both ports to key production and consumption markets in Canada and the United States."

The port of Vancouver is very important to CN's intermodal and bulk traffic, and CN welcomes federal investments designed to strengthen that port's competitiveness.

CN is also pleased that the strategy recognizes the significant potential of the port of Prince Rupert. CN believes Prince Rupert stands to become a key gateway for Asian container traffic entering North America and travelling over CN's network to key North American markets. Work is on-going to start up phase one of the terminal in early 2007.
