CNSC Announces Decision on Screening Environmental Assessment and Approval of AREVA Resources Canada Inc.'s (AREVA) Project to Install and Operate a Ferric Sulphate Production Circuit ...

... at the McClean Lake Operation

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 13, 2007) - Following a hearing on October 25, 2006, in Ottawa, Ontario, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced its conclusion that AREVA's proposed project to install and operate a ferric sulphate production circuit at the McClean Lake Operation located in Northern Saskatchewan, taking into account identified mitigation measures, is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. The project involves the production of liquid ferric sulphate from iron ore transported to the McClean Lake site.

The Commission's decision was based on its consideration of a screening environmental assessment of the project that was prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA). Further, with respect to the CEAA, the Commission decided not to refer the project to the federal Minister of the Environment for referral to a review panel or mediator.

Under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, the Commission proceeded with its consideration of AREVA's request and CNSC staff's recommendations for the approval of the proposed project. On December 5, 2006, the Commission approved the construction and operation of the ferric sulphate production circuit at the McClean Lake operation, in accordance with condition 3.1 of the operating licence.

A Record of Proceedings, including Reasons for Decision of the hearing on the environmental assessment is available on the CNSC Web site at, or by contacting the CNSC.

The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment and to respect Canada's international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
