CNSC: Notice of Public Hearing

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - June 13, 2005) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a two-day public hearing on the application by Rio Algom Limited (Rio Algom), Toronto, Ontario, for the renewal of its licence to operate uranium mine waste sites located near Elliot Lake, Ontario.



Hearing Day One: August 17, 2005

Public hearings follow the agenda published prior to the hearing date.

Rio Algom has completed the decommissioning of the related uranium mine and mill sites. The current Radioactive Waste Facility Operating Licence for the management of remaining low-level radioactive mill tailings and other process wastes expires on December 31, 2005. In its application for licence renewal, Rio Algom has requested a licence for an indefinite term.

The public is invited to comment on the application either by oral presentation or written submission on Hearing Day Two. Requests to intervene and text of oral presentations or written submissions must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission by September 19, 2005 at the address below.
