CNSC: Notice of Public Hearing

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - June 13, 2005) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold two public hearings on applications by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), Mississauga, Ontario, for the renewal of the operating licences for the MAPLE reactors and the New Processing Facility (NPF). The two MAPLE reactors and the NPF are located at AECL's Chalk River Laboratories in Chalk River, Ontario. While separately licensed by the CNSC, the MAPLE reactors and the NPF combine to form the proposed new medical isotope production facility. Both hearings will therefore be held on the same two-day hearing schedule.



Hearing Day One: August 18, 2005

Hearing Day Two: October 19, 2005

Public hearings follow the agenda published prior to the hearing date.

Both the MAPLE and NFP facilities have been constructed. CNSC authorization for commercial operation is pending the successful completion of commissioning tests by AECL.

The public is invited to comment on the applications either by oral presentation or written submission on Hearing Day Two. Requests to participate (interventions) and text of oral presentations or written submissions must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission by September 19, 2005 at the address below. Please specify whether the intervention is with respect to the MAPLE reactors, the NPF, or both facilities.
