CNSC: Notice of Public Hearing

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Aug. 4, 2005) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a one-day public hearing to consider the results of an Environmental Assessment Screening (EA Screening) of Cameco Corporation's (Cameco) proposal to produce commercial quantities of blended slightly enriched uranium dioxide (SEU), to process scrap in a scrap recovery circuit, and to produce blended dysprosium oxide and natural uranium dioxide (BDU) at its facility located in Port Hope, Ontario. The environmental assessment is being conducted pursuant to the requirements of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA).

One-Day Hearing: October 20, 2005, from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm and
from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Place: Port Hope Legion Hall, 99 Toronto Rd, Port Hope,

Public hearings follow the agenda published prior to the hearing date.

CNSC staff received notice from Cameco of its intent to apply for an amendment to its existing Fuel Facility Operating Licence for the Port Hope Conversion Facility to enable the proposed project to proceed.

Before the Commission may decide on an application from Cameco, an environmental assessment must be completed in compliance with the CEAA to determine if the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, taking into account the appropriate mitigation measures. If the Commission concludes that the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, it may proceed with a licensing hearing on Cameco's application.

In its examination of the EA Screening during the hearing, the Commission will also consider whether a referral of the project to the federal Minister of the environment for a review panel or mediator is warranted.

The draft EA Screening Report was made available to the public on May 11, 2005, and the public comment period ended June 24, 2005. Commission documents related to the hearing on the proposed EA Screening Report will be available August 19, 2005.

The public is invited to comment on the proposed EA Screening Report either by oral presentation or written submission. Requests to intervene and text of oral presentations or written submissions must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission by September 19, 2005 at the address below.

Agendas and information on the hearing process are available at the CNSC Web site: Hearing documents (submissions) are not available on-line and must be requested through the Secretariat at the address below:
