CNSC: Notice of Public Hearing

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Jan. 20, 2006) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a one-day public hearing on the application by COGEMA Resources Inc. (COGEMA) to extend the scope of its Mining Equipment Development (MED) Program at the McClean Lake Uranium Mine and Mill Operation in Northern Saskatchewan.

One-Day Hearing: March 30, 2006
Place: CNSC Public Hearing Room, 14th floor,
280 Slater Street, Ottawa, Ontario

Public hearings follow the agenda published prior to the hearing date.

The MED Program is a small scale mining test program designed to determine the suitability of using specialized equipment on surface to extract ore from underground deposits. The activities related to Phase I of the MED Program are currently authorized under COGEMA's Uranium Mine Operating Licence. For the proposed extension of the scope of the program to allow additional drill holes under Phase II, the Commission would need to amend the licence for the McClean Lake Operation.

Submissions from CNSC staff and COGEMA for the Commission's hearing on the licence amendment will be available January 28, 2006. The public is invited to intervene at the public hearing either by written submission or by oral presentation and written submission. Requests to intervene must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission by February 27, 2006 at the address below. In accordance with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Rules of Procedure, requests to intervene must include a written submission and, where applicable, the text of any oral presentation to be made to the Commission.

Agendas and information on the hearing process are available at the CNSC Web site: www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca. Hearing documents (submissions) are not available on-line and must be requested through the Secretariat at the address below:
