CNSC: Notice of Public Hearing

Ref. 2007-H-03

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Nov. 27, 2006) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a one-day public hearing on the application by Cameco Corporation (Cameco) to extend the expiry date of its current operating licence for the decommissioned Beaverlodge mill and mine site located in Northern Saskatchewan. The licence is due to expire on March 31, 2007.

One-Day Hearing: January 25, 2007
Place: CNSC Public Hearing Room, 14th floor, 280 Slater
Street, Ottawa, Ontario

Public hearings follow the agenda published prior to the hearing date.

Cameco is requesting a nine-month extension to its Beaverlodge licence to allow sufficient time for the promulgation of The Reclaimed Industrial Sites Act and associated regulations by the Province of Saskatchewan. The extension would also allow Cameco to complete special investigations designed to assess the current on- and off-site legacy impacts of the decommissioned site.

Submissions from CNSC staff and Cameco for the Commission's hearing on the licence amendment will be available November 27, 2006.

The public is invited to comment on the application. Requests to intervene must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission by December 22, 2006 at the address below. The request must include the following information, as per the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Rules of Procedure:

- a written submission of the comments to be presented to the Commission;

- a statement setting out whether the requester wishes to intervene by way of written submission only or by way of written submission and oral presentation; and

- name, address and telephone of the requester.

Agendas and information on the public hearing process, including how to participate in public hearings, are available at the CNSC Web site: www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca. Hearing documents (submissions) are not available on-line and must be requested through the Secretariat at the address below:
