CNSC: Notice of Public Hearing

Ref. 2007-H-09

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - March 15, 2007) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a one-day public hearing on the application by Rio Algom Limited to replace the existing effluent treatment plant at the decommissioned Stanleigh Mine located near the City of Elliot Lake, Ontario.

One-Day Hearing: May 16, 2007
Place: CNSC Public Hearing Room, 14th floor, 280 Slater
Street, Ottawa, Ontario

Public hearings follow the agenda published prior to the hearing date.

Rio Algom Limited is seeking the authorization to replace its existing effluent treatment plant at the Stanleigh tailings management area with a smaller, more energy efficient effluent treatment facility. This would require the demolition of the existing plant and the construction of an energy efficient smaller plant similar to those in operation at Rio Algom's Pronto, Nordic, Quirke and Panel sites. It also requires the construction of an access road and the building of a dam and settling pond near McCabe Lake.

CNSC staff and Rio Algom's submissions to be considered at this hearing will be available after March 16, 2007.

The public is invited to comment on Rio Algom's application for a licence amendment. Requests to intervene must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission by April 16, 2007 at the address below. The request must include the following information, as per the CNSC Rules of Procedure:

- a written submission of the comments to be presented to the Commission;

- a statement setting out whether the requester wishes to intervene by way of written submission only or by way of written submission and oral presentation; and

- name, address and telephone of the requester.

Agendas and information on the public hearing process, including how to participate in public hearings, are available at the CNSC Web site: www.nuclearsafety.gc.ca. Hearing documents (submissions) are not available on-line and must be requested through the Secretariat at the address below:
