CNSC: Notice of Public Hearing

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - April 25, 2007) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) will hold a two-day public hearing to consider Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL)'s application to issue an operating licence for its Dedicated Isotope Facilities (DIF) located at AECL's Chalk River Laboratories in Chalk River, Ontario. The DIF is comprised of two separately licensed installations, the MAPLE reactors and the New Processing Facility (NPF). The current operating licences for these two installations expire on November 30, 2007. AECL has applied for one operating licence for both installations, to be valid for a period of 47 months.

Public hearings follow the agenda published prior to the hearing date.

Both the MAPLE and NFP installations have been constructed. AECL is seeking to complete the commissioning of the installations and their subsequent operation for the production of medical isotopes.

The public is invited to comment on AECL's application on Hearing Day Two. Requests to intervene must be filed with the Secretary of the Commission by August 13, 2007 at the address below. The request must include the following information, as per the CNSC Rules of Procedure:

- a written submission of the comments to be presented to the Commission;

- a statement setting out whether the requester wishes to intervene by way of written submission only or by way of written submission and oral presentation; and

- name, address and telephone of the requester.
