CNSC Professionals Sign Agreement

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 8, 2010) - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and its professional staff represented by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PISPC) signed their second collective agreement on Monday, November 8, 2010. The agreement will expire on March 31, 2011.

In mid-2009, the federal government objected to an arbitral award that provided for the reimbursement of the fees incurred by the Institute's Nuclear Regulatory Group (NUREG) members in professional organizations or governing bodies. It claimed that the reimbursement of these professional fees violated the Expenditure Restraint Act. However, in May 2010, the Federal Court dismissed the federal government's application for the judicial review of the award. The government initially challenged that decision but it subsequently withdrew its appeal, enabling the CNSC to finally obtain Governor-in-Council approval to sign a collective agreement with its professional staff.

Gary Corbett, President of The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada said "We are very pleased to be finally signing this agreement which is long overdue. It was unfortunate that it took a Federal Court ruling to enforce a tentative agreement that was essentially imposed by legislation but our members are nonetheless happy to have finally secured the agreement. We look forward to an even better relationship with CNSC that will hopefully achieve speedier collective agreements in the future"

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is a national union representing 59,000 professionals across Canada, including professional staff at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).
