Co-op Injects Optimism Into TEMAGAMI

GUELPH, ONTARIO--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 21, 2005) - The Ontario co-operative sector recognized The Renewable Energy Co-operative North Inc. (TREC North) with its Co-operative Innovator Award during the 7th Annual SPIRIT awards, held during the Co-op Week Gala in Burlington, ON, Wednesday night.

TREC North was created by a group of local citizens to bring a sense of optimism and possibilities back into its community. The co-operative, based in Temagami, ON is developing a local energy co-operative to produce clean, renewable electricity.

"Anything that would improve our environment is a plus, and wind power is certainly better than coal or nuclear power," states Marcelle Berube, TREC North's treasurer.

The co-op is envisioning a 10 megawatt project, consisting of five wind turbines. Temagami would use about half of power generated, with the rest to be sold to the North American power grid to generate profits and dividends for co-operative shareholders. The community-owned co-operative business model allows individuals all across Northeastern Ontario to invest in this project through the purchase of shares.

The first phase of the project is a 12 month wind resource assessment and feasibility study to determine whether there is enough wind in Temagami to power the 10 megawatt wind farm. In August, a meteorological tower was erected and it will collect data for one year. Anna Gibson, founding director of TREC North is overjoyed at the successes so far, calling the distinctive tower 'big, tangible evidence that our project is underway."
