Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada: Budget Missed Chance to Help House 4 Million Canadians

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - March 19, 2007) - Today's federal budget stressed giving Canadians a chance to reach their full potential, but missed one of the key components needed to do that - funding for secure, affordable housing for the 4 million Canadians in core housing need, the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada said today.

"We are disappointed that there is not additional funding for affordable housing in this budget," said Nicholas Gazzard, Executive Director. "The budget does not commit the federal government to a continuing role in the financing of affordable housing, a role it played from the 1960s until the early 1990s. While today it is assumed that provinces and territories will play the key role in the delivery of affordable housing programs, this should not absolve the federal government from financial responsibility for housing those four million Canadians whose shelter needs are not served by the market."

At least 1.5 million households - four million women, men and children - are in 'core housing need'. Thousands are homeless. The Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada has been urging all levels of government to work together to find solutions to make sure all Canadians have decent, affordable homes.

"While we welcome the $1.4 billion of new housing spending that is in the pipeline at this time," Gazzard says, "Every federal budget needs to include additional funding, so this urgent need can be addressed. Spending on housing cannot be an on-again, off-again proposition. Developers of non-profit housing need some level of predictability to work on projects that may take years to complete."

CHF Canada has proposed an energy retrofit pilot project to help existing housing co-ops reduce their energy use and hopes this initiative can be accommodated through the government's new energy initiative.
