Coast Capital Savings Charity Golf Tournament Scores a Hole-in-One for Depression Research

SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - June 12, 2006) -

Fundraiser yields more than $150,000 for VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation

For those suffering from the disease, it can be a bleak experience but it was all bright and sunny for Coast Capital Savings' 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament to support depression research as golf enthusiasts from across B.C. and beyond chipped in to well-surpass the event's $150,000 fundraising goal.

The tourney was held at the Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey on Monday, June 5, and raised $157,000 from initial tallies. The money will go to the VGH and UBC Foundation to help fund depression research.

"Although we often don't talk about it, depression is a serious illness that has touched individuals in our families, our workplaces and our communities," said Lloyd Craig, president and CEO of Coast Capital Savings. "Through this tournament among others, we are committed to supporting the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation's work in this area and making a difference in the lives of those who suffer from depression."

Craig thanked Coast Capital Savings staff for their initiative in starting this tournament and expressed appreciation to corporate donors, and the many participating golfers for helping raise more than $430,000 for various charities in the past five years.

The tournament is organized by a committee of Coast Capital Savings staff chaired by Central City branch manager, Leslie McLeod. "We set the fundraising bar very high this year, and were confident we could make our goal," explains McLeod. "We were delighted with the response from the sheer number of sponsors, individuals and businesses who wanted to partner with us in raising money for this worthy cause. Thanks to their support, it's been our most successful tournament to date."

Funds from the tournament help the VGH and UBC Hospital Foundation for depression research attain their goals of better diagnosis and treatment, and heightened public awareness for those suffering from the debilitating illness.

Key corporate sponsors for this year's depression fundraiser include title sponsor CRI Canada, diamond sponsors Bayern LB, Bull Housser Tupper, Campbell & Pound Real Estate Appraisers and Advisors, Canadian Northern Shield, Spectrum and Zibit, and platinum sponsors Caisse Centrale Desjardins, Central City, Stelmark and TD Mutual Funds.
