Coast Capital Savings Scores an Ace For Depression Research; 7th Annual Charity Golf Tournament Raises More Than $190,000

SURREY, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - June 20, 2008) - Coast Capital Savings' 7th Annual Charity Golf Tournament benefiting depression research and treatment has raised more than $190,000 for the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation.

Since its inception in 2002, the Coast Capital Savings Charity Golf Tournament has raised more than $826,000 for depression and other causes. Depression will plague half a million British Columbians this year.

Lloyd Craig, president and CEO of Coast Capital Savings and chair of the BC Business and Economic Roundtable on Mental Health, said businesses can provide support through programs that help in early identification and treatment of depression in the workplace.

"A recent study revealed that 83 per cent of Canadians show up for work sick or exhausted and that 89 per cent believe mental health problems, such as depression, have been on the increase," said Craig. "These colleagues deserve to be treated not just without stigma, but with dignity and understanding."

The provincial economy suffers losses of about $2 billion annually as a result of depression and on an average day, five percent of the workforce is disabled by this ailment. One of the goals of the Coast Capital Savings Charity Golf Tournament is to raise awareness on the key role employers can play in this effort.

"We've created a culture at Coast Capital where it's okay for employees to be open about their depression, knowing they can always count on support from the company," Craig said. "There is a lot businesses can and must do to address this issue because the health of our employees needs to be our priority."

The golf fundraiser took place at the Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey. Global TV senior meteorologist Mark Madryga was on hand to guarantee sunshine and co-host the event with Shane Foxman of CBC Vancouver sports.

This year's presenting sponsors included CRI Canada and Bull Housser and Tupper.
