Cocktail World Cup Jumps Off

QUEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND--(Marketwire - September 9, 2008) - The luxurious ski resort township of Queenstown in the South Island of New Zealand today welcomed forty-five bartenders from around the world for the first day of the five-day 42Below Cocktail World Cup challenge.

The Cocktail World Cup has been combining extreme activities with cocktail making for the past five years as bartenders head to New Zealand from as far away as Italy, France, United States and the United Kingdom to complete for the coveted title as the Cocktail World Cup Champion of the World. Over the event the regional teams, each comprised of three world-class bartenders, complete a series of knockout elimination rounds that take place in extreme and varied locations.

As the travel weary travellers landed at Queenstown airport they were immediately whisked away to the first of their challenges in chilly 6 degree C temperatures.

The forty-five contestants smiled nervously as they watched 42Below CEO Paul Dibbayawan take the first plunge from the Kawarau Bridge Bungy as part of the Cocktail World Cup 2008 opening initiation. In close pursuit the contestants lined up to take their turn to throw themselves from the small platform at the top of bridge 42 metres above the freezing Kawarau River below.

Keenan Wong from Leeds in the United Kingdom dressed up for the occasion in an eclectic ensemble that included a snorkel. When asked what he thought of the experience he said, "Before I jumped I was completely jetlagged now that the endorphins and adrenalin has kicked in I feel like a new man."

The London team kept up the British style with their jungle inspired outfits featuring yellow and green inflatable snakes and the English flag.

Paul Dibbayawan said, "This year the 42Below Cocktail World Cup has really stepped up. We have more contestants representing new geographic regions and a line-up of events that will really showcase the magic of 42Below as an iconic New Zealand brand. 42Below is all about pushing boundaries whether it be in mixology, creative pursuits or physical endurance. It is great to be able to bring the very best bartenders from around the world to experience 42Below here in New Zealand where it all started."
