CODE BLUE for Child Care

Child Care Activists tell Members of Parliament how important quality care is for children Attention: Assignment Editor, Media Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO--(CCNMatthews - March 31, 2006) - The Code Blue for Child Care Campaign is a national campaign to save the child care agreements the federal and provincial governments reached last year.

On Saturday, April 1st at 8:30 a.m. child care activists will be at the office of MP Colin Carrie, 1 Mary Street North, Unit C in Oshawa. The message to Members of Parliament across the country is the same, "Canadians want a quality affordable child care system in this country and Harper must honour the child care agreements the federal and provincial governments signed last year."

Joining labour and community child care advocates in Oshawa will be Irene Harris, Secretary-Treasurer of the Ontario Federation of Labour, who said, "We are calling on Stephen Harper to live up to child care agreements that are already in place across Canada and not to dismantle the building blocks of a national child care system.

"Ontario stands to lose 25,000 childcare spaces," Harris said. "As a Member of Parliament Colin Carrie needs to face his constituents and be prepared to answer at the ballot box if he doesn't live up to and honour signed agreements."

This CODE BLUE event is sponsored by the Durham Region Labour Council, the Durham Region Child Care Community and the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care.
