Code School Launches App for iPhone and iPad

Company Reaches 1M Member Mark, Extends Learning Experience to Mobile for the First Time

ORLANDO, FL--(Marketwired - Oct 27, 2014) - Code School, the online learning destination for existing and aspiring developers that teaches through entertaining content, today announced the launch of its universal app for iOS devices. Available for free in Apple's App Store, the app brings Code School's trademark entertaining teaching style to mobile devices, and follows a year of record growth for the code education company.

"Code School has a rich history of teaching code over the web, but the online education space is evolving as more people demand an anytime, anywhere experience," said Gregg Pollack, founder and CEO of Code School. "Our one goal at Code School has always been to be the best way to learn new technologies, and that shouldn't have to stop at a computer. We're excited to launch the app today, and hope both existing members and new users find it useful in their learning journeys."

Key features and benefits of the app include:

  • Course videos: Enjoy more than 300 instructional videos on the intricacies of JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Ruby, iOS and Git, as well as popular developer tools such as Chrome Dev Tools;
  • Free content: Just like on codeschool.com, a large portion of the educational videos are completely free, with Code School subscriptions unlocking all app content;
  • Downloadable video materials: Continue learning even in poor signal areas;
  • Instant content updates: View new content on the phone at the same time it's launched on the website -- just load the app and start watching!

The release comes just as the company has nearly doubled its member-base over the past year to more than 1M developers. In recent months the company has also expanded beyond just courses, launching screencast series such as "Soup to Bits" and "Feature Focus" that focus on putting the process of creating new applications and features into practice.

Its integrated and entertaining approach to teaching code seems to be working: In a recent survey of its members with nearly 8,000 respondents, Code School found 54 percent use the technologies they learn on Code School in their professional careers. Ninety-five percent were also motivated by the launch of a new course, each of which is built around a creative theme and combines gaming mechanics with video instruction and in-browser coding challenges to make learning both educational and memorable. In fact, more than 80 percent also said its gaming-inspired elements such as badges on the website keep them interested and motivated to keep learning.
