Codenomicon Defends Against Network Data Storage Threats

SAN JOSE, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- March 26, 2007 -- Codenomicon Ltd., a leading provider of state-of-the-art security and robustness solutions, today announced DEFENSICS Filesystems & Storage solution for securing the networked storage systems.

Recent years have seen a steady trend towards networked data storing with Storage Area Networks (SAN) and Network Attached Storage (NAS). Traditionally, SAN systems have been isolated islands in corporate data centers, but several forces have been driving these systems to open up the doors to external networks. Requirements for better resource utilization and de-centralized access, as well as governmental regulations that mandate longer data storing times and disaster recovery, forcing organizations to connect SAN systems to public IP networks. To make matters worse, storage systems have been originally designed for high capacity and performance, with security often being just an afterthought. Retro-fitting defenses to systems like these represents a huge challenge. During the past few years, several high-profile vulnerabilities have been publicly reported for protocols like CIFS/SMB, iSCSI, RPC and NFS that are among the basic building blocks of networked storage systems.

Codenomicon releases its DEFENSICS Filesystems & Storage tools to mitigate these threats and to help build a complete, proactive security solution for the industry.

"The release of DEFENSICS Filesystems & Storage solution enables organizations to defend against yet another attack vector in converging network environments that are increasingly open and vulnerable," said Ari Takanen, Chief Technology Officer at Codenomicon. "Together with our existing solutions to defend against IP-based, digital media and wireless attacks, this release further strengthens Codenomicon's position as the leading one-stop shop for proactive security that helps organizations stay ahead of the public threats."

While any SAN/NAS vulnerabilities can easily have a severe impact on big service providers, financial institutions and governments, the threat is also real for a great number of other application domains. For example, CIFS/SMB problems can affect almost every PC owner, and RPC can be found in very diverse devices, such as wireless and wired network infrastructure appliances.

DEFENSICS Filesystems & Storage tools can be used by vendors to ensure the robustness of their appliances against both previously known and zero-day vulnerabilities in CIFS/SMB, iSCSI, RPC and NFS protocols early in the software development lifecycle. Enterprises can assess the security of the systems they are about to deploy, or have already in place, to defend them against malicious access.
