Coffee Break Briefing About Pensions

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 10, 2009) - We are inviting you to a Canadian Labour Congress coffee break briefing at the Hotel Indigo, 123 Metcalfe Street (at Laurier), Ottawa, in the Azurite Boardroom on Friday, December 11, beginning at 9:15 a.m.

Canada's finance ministers will meet in Whitehorse on December 17-18 to talk about pensions. The CLC has a detailed proposal regarding pension reform and we would like to outline it to you. We will have our staff pension experts on hand to describe our plan in brief and we will also have some of our basic materials available.

The CLC believes that the retirement security crisis is too important to be solved by a few people meeting behind closed doors in Whitehorse. We are calling for a pan-Canadian pensions' summit early in the new year to bring together government, business, labour and other stakeholders to develop real pension solutions.

We believe that we should use an enhanced CPP as the cornerstone of pension reform, rather than following a piecemeal approach floated by a few provinces or the financial services industry. We believe that this is an important moment in Canadian history, akin to the debate on health care in the 1960s. All Canadians deserve to live in security and dignity in retirement and enhancing the CPP is the best way to achieve that goal.
