COFI Welcomes Market Based Pricing System

KELOWNA, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(CCNMatthews - April 6, 2006) - Council of Forest Industries members, meeting in their annual convention, welcomed Premier Gordon Campbell's announcement, made during his speech to 600 delegates, that the government will introduce a market based timber pricing system for the interior later this year.

"The move to market based timber pricing realizes a number of important goals," noted COFI President and CEO, John Allan. "The new system will address the issue of declining timber values stemming from the impact of the Mountain Pine Beetle while ensuring the public receives appropriate return for the public resource, all in the context of a competitive pricing system," he added.

COFI has worked with the Ministry of Forests and Range over the past three years in analysis and design of the system and will continue to work closely with the government on implementation issues including ongoing review to ensure the system adequately reflects the economic realities of the industry.

Allan also observed that, "While this new system is first a good and progressive step for British Columbia it should also demonstrate to and convince U.S. decision makers one more time and once and for all that our forest sector is not subsidized."
