Cohn & Wolfe Takes on the Plastic Vortex as Pro Bono Agency of Record for Project Kaisei

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - January 13, 2011) - Cohn & Wolfe ( has been named communications Agency of Record (AOR) on a pro-bono basis for Project Kaisei, the agency announced today. Project Kaisei ( is a project of Ocean Voyages Institute dedicated to researching and finding solutions to the "Plastic Vortex," an area of concentrated marine debris trapped by the circulating currents of the North Pacific gyre. Similar gyres in the South Pacific, North and South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean illustrate the global impact of plastic and other garbage that finds its way into our oceans.

Kaisei means "Ocean Planet" in Japanese, and is the name of the tall ship used for Project Kaisei's two expeditions to date. As marketing communications partner, Cohn & Wolfe will help build awareness for the global problem of plastics in our ocean through innovative outreach and initiatives that inspire people to act and advocate for solutions.

The waste found in the North Pacific gyre consists of consumer and industrial plastic items, derelict fishing gear, and a pervasive amount of plastic particles that are the result of photo-degradation of larger pieces suspended at different depths in the water column. Among Project Kaisei's chief missions is the scientific study of the effects of plastic in the ocean environment, how that may impact us, and new ways to drive innovative recovery, recycling and sustainable manufacturing technologies.

"The 'Plastic Vortex' is an environmental harbinger, irrefutable evidence that a disposable society is not without consequence," said Annie Longsworth, Global Sustainability Practice Leader for Cohn & Wolfe. "Cohn & Wolfe has embraced Project Kasei's mission as its own, and the partnership demonstrates that our commitment to sustainability includes our work with clients and extends to every office and every employee in our network."

"Project Kaisei was established to increase our global understanding of marine debris, its impact on our ocean environment and how we can introduce solutions for both prevention and clean up," said Doug Woodring, co-founder of Project Kaisei. "Cohn & Wolfe's commitment and passion to environmental responsibility, combined with their incredible creativity and communications capabilities, will surely help turn the world's attention to this massive issue."

As one of the first PR agencies to offer a full-service global sustainability practice, Cohn & Wolfe is renowned for its creativity, branding expertise, and pioneering digital and social media work. Its annual Green Brands survey -- now in its sixth year -- has become the foremost study of consumer perception of green practices in business, their level of involvement in improving the state of the environment, and which brands they think are best at being green. In August 2010, Cohn & Wolfe was identified by independent analyst, Verdantix, as one of only four agencies "verging on leadership" in sustainability communications.

Project Kaisei is an international mission with offices in San Francisco and Hong Kong and partners, collaborators and supporters around the globe. With a comprehensive approach unique among the conservation groups concerned with the marine debris issue, Project Kaisei is working to stop the flow of materials into the ocean, organizing scientific expeditions to determine impacts of debris and exploring remediation solutions with minimal impact on sea life and the marine environment. | Twitter:!/ProjectKaisei | Facebook:
