College Students Find Job Satisfaction as Independent Contractors With Vector Marketing

WILMINGTON, DE--(Marketwire - November 8, 2010) -  With the job market for college students and recent college graduates continuing to present a challenge, an increasing number of students are looking "out of the box" and creating their own business opportunities as independent contractors. Vector Marketing Corporation, the direct sales division of Cutco Cutlery Corporation, the largest manufacturer of high end kitchen cutlery in North America, has been at the center of this trend.

Vector Marketing has seen an upsurge of college students joining its sales force. These students are opting to become independent contractors in lieu of working as employees in a more "traditional" job environment.

"Many of today's college students are entrepreneurial and have the desire to drive their own success," says Sarah Baker Andrus, director of external relations & academic programs for Vector Marketing. "For such students -- especially those who want to work in an environment of unlimited potential that directly correlates to their own efforts -- becoming an independent contractor for a company such as Vector Marketing is the perfect alternative to a more traditional, structured job environment."

Benefits of working as an independent contractor include:

  • Flexibility
  • Good income based on performance
  • Ability to be your own boss
  • Freedom to direct your own work

"Working as an independent contractor for Vector Marketing has provided me with many advantages that a traditional job lacks," says Christine Hanks, a sales representative for Vector Marketing since June 2008. "I love the independence of being my own boss and having the ability to run my own business," says Hanks, who is based out of Vector Marketing's San Jose office. "I also love that the harder I work, the more I can increase my income. My success is up to me, and that's very freeing!"

Occupations where independent contractor status is typical include:

  • Sales representative
  • Real estate agent
  • Insurance agent
  • Stock broker
  • Small business

"Working as an independent contractor certainly isn't for everyone," says Baker Andrus. "People who thrive in this environment tend to be highly self-motivated, with a strong desire to constantly challenge themselves to create and reach higher goals. For these people, the sky's the limit, which usually is not the case with a traditional job."
