Colombian labour leader to visit Truro, tour water facilities

TRURO, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - May 2, 2013) - A visiting labour leader from one of the most violent countries in the world in which to be a labour leader will be in Truro, Friday, May 3 as a guest of CUPE Local 734.

CUPE Nova Scotia President Danny Cavanagh says Margarita Lopez is visiting our province as part of the union's Latin America Solidarity Project.

Says Cavanagh, "This courageous woman is the president of SINTRACUAVALLE, a municipal water workers' union in a country where more than 2,000 union activists have either been killed or have vanished in recent years.

"We are honoured to have her visit our town and she'll be touring some of the Town of Truro water and wastewater facilities with Councillor Raymond Tynes."

Says Cavanagh, himself a municipal water worker, "Protecting public water and wastewater is an issue that cuts across all borders. The working people of Colombia know this struggle all too well. Lopez's union has been fighting to keep their water in public hands, despite corruption, death threats and more."

(ASSIGNMENT EDITORS: Ms. Lopez will be touring the Truro Water Treatment Plant at 2:00 pm. She'll be accompanied by Jason Cavanagh, President of Local 734, Danny Cavanagh and Town Councillor Raymond Tynes.)
