Communicators Win Big at the IABC Edmonton Capital Awards Gala

The IABC Edmonton 2012 Capital Awards Gala awarded the best of the best

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - June 8, 2012) - Over 25 individuals and organizations were awarded with some of their industry's most prestigious awards Tuesday, June 5. Northern Alberta's top communicators came together for IABC Edmonton's annual Capital Awards Gala at the TransAlta Arts Barn to recognize excellence in the local communications community and be immersed in old Hollywood glamour.

"The Capital Awards Gala was a huge success. We honoured 58 award winners and presented three Awards of Distinction to outstanding individuals during a fabulous evening that captured the essence of old Hollywood," says IABC President Kate Lister. "Congratulations to all the Capital Awards winners who submitted exceptional work; this is a testament to how talented the communications community is in Northern Alberta."

In External Communications Programs category, Awards of Excellence went to Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD) - University of Alberta, Strathcona County Recreation - Parks and Culture and the City of Edmonton. Awards of Merit went to WCB Alberta, Alberta Blue Cross, Media-Masters Creative Communications and ATB Financial. In the External/Community Events category, an Award of Excellence went to the Telus World of Science.

In the Internal Communications Programs Category two Awards of Excellence were awarded to Capital Power Corporation and ATCO Electric - Operations Division. Awards of Merit went to Alberta Blue Cross, APEGA (The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta) and Alberta Health Services. For Internal Events An Award of Excellence and an Award of Merit went to Alberta Blue Cross. Awards of Merit also went to the Faculty of Science and the Alberta Motor Association.

In the Marketing and Advertising Campaigns category, Awards of Excellence were awarded to Calder Bateman Communications. Awards of Merit were awarded to The Edmonton Public Library and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, with DDB Canada and FREE receiving both Awards of Excellence and Merit.

In the Ongoing Tactics category, Calder Bateman and Capital Power were awarded Awards of Excellence, while Alberta Blue Cross, MacEwan University - School of Business, Covenant Health, Alberta Health Services and ATB Financial were awarded Awards of Merit. In the One-Time Tactics category, Awards of Excellence went to DDB Canada and Covenant Health and Awards of Merit were awarded to FREE, NAIT and Calder Bateman Communications.

In the Visual Communications category, Awards of Excellence were awarded to FREE, DDB Canada and Calder Bateman Communications. In the same category, Covenant Health, DDB Canada, MacEwan University - Faculty of Arts and Science and Calder Bateman Communications were all awarded an Award of Merit. Finally, in the Student Category, two groups of students each won Awards of Excellence.

In addition to the above mentioned categories, IABC Edmonton recognized three individuals with Awards of Distinction. The Capital Communicator of the Year award went to Dr. Trevor Theman, Registrar of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta who is a visionary leader, a talented and dedicated administrator and a tireless proponent of professionalism. The Communicator of the Year award went to Traci Bednard, vice president of HR, Communications and Passenger Experience for Edmonton International Airport (EIA) for the outstanding work she's done promoting the recent expansion at EIA. The Member of the Year award went to Geoff Geddes for his ongoing commitment as a volunteer in IABC's communications portfolio.
