Community Banks & Credit Unions Stage Nationwide Gas Station Takeovers to Contrast Community Banking From Megabanks

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwired - Aug 29, 2013) - This week, in a rare moment of unity, more than 30 community banks and credit unions picked up the tab at gas stations across the country to personally pump free gas for local residents and encourage consumers to take back their banking from America's megabanks.

The event displayed a sense of community and personal touch that megabanks famously lack while also educating consumers on how community banks and credit unions fuel their local economies. Employees from each community bank or credit union manned the event by personally pumping $20 in free gas to the first 200 local residents in each city, totaling over $150,000 in free gas to 7,600 people over the course of two days.

"This effort signifies a growing trend of community banks and credit unions across the country partnering up to demonstrate that there are better banking options than the megabanks," said Gabe Krajicek, CEO behind Kasasa.com, a resource for consumers who desire free rewards checking accounts at local banks and credit unions.

Over the past few years, the too-big-to-fail megabanks have introduced new fees, consistently have horrendous customer service, and are widely considered to be the cause of the Great Recession. In partnership with Kasasa.com, participating community banks and credit unions showcased the many benefits they offer; including free reward checking, superior customer service, nationwide ATM fee refunds, and no minimum balance requirements.

"People across the country are finding that banking with a community bank or credit union delivers a better banking experience overall, where consumers can save more money on their bank account and feel good about supporting their local communities," continued Krajicek.

All 38 gas station takeovers received an overwhelming amount of support, gas stations saw lines stretching several blocks and some people even camped out overnight to receive free gas. Cities included Dallas, Atlanta, St. Paul, Baltimore, St. Louis, and Portland, among more than 30 others.
