Compass Intelligence Releases Latest Report Assessing Device Buyback and Trade-In Programs

The Report Provides a Comprehensive Assessment of Leading Wireless Carriers and Retailers Such as Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, ecoATM, Apple and Gazelle

SAN ANTONIO, TX--(Marketwired - July 28, 2015) - Compass Intelligence announced today the release of its latest report titled: "Buyback and Trade-in Program Market Overview and Program Assessment: Evaluating the state of the mobile device reclamation market." The report evaluates different buyback and trade-in programs available in the market for reclaiming mobile devices in the industry. Vendors evaluated in the report include the leading wireless carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile), leading retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart and other companies such as ecoATM, Apple and Gazelle. Authored by Kate Pearce, Compass Intelligence's Director of Mobility Research, this report examines (and scores) trade-in or buyback programs in the industry and provides an assessment and rankings for each program.

"Over the last year, new programs introduced by the carriers are changing the device lifecycle," states Pearce. "Carrier equipment installment plans and leasing options (offered by Sprint and T-Mobile) often require a smartphone trade-in in order to upgrade or complete the terms of the lease. This shift in the market has changed what customers do with their old devices once they are ready to upgrade. As of the end of 2014, we estimate there were 35 million subscribers using these types of plans."

The report highlights three categories:

  • Carrier overall ratings for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon
  • In-Store ratings for Apple, Best Buy, ecoATM, Target and Walmart
  • Online ratings for Amazon, Best Buy, Gazelle, Target and Walmart

The reuse and recycling market continues to become an integral part of the mobile ecosystem.

  • The process is good for carriers in that they can re-use "gently-owned" phones for their warranty/insurance or prepaid/MVNO partners.
  • Carriers and other recommerce vendors can also resell these used devices to secondary markets where used iPhones (and other devices) are a hot commodity.
  • Customers are more likely to recycle devices for compensation in addition to doing something good for the environment.

Clients may sign up for one of our annual service plans (ASPs), which will provide access to this report and other reports published in the Green Technology/Reuse & Recycling research track for a period of 12 months. Details about our ASPs can be found here. In addition to access to information about this emerging market segment, clients can enjoy access to business decision-maker and consumer surveys, analyst inquiry and briefings or workshops with our senior research team.
