Key Findings from the Report

  • mHealth: With an ageing baby boomer generation and the ability to integrate with other solutions in the home and vehicle make mHealth a killer app in the IoT market. It is expected to help drive growth for cellular connections and innovative software solutions. This market is on the cusp of strong growth and having the right medical device partners will play a key role in deciding who wins or loses in this market. If a company is not partnering with a tier-1 medical device company right now, it is already on the outside looking in. Understanding where the growth lies with specific medical devices is important. Some devices are growing faster than others. The investment made on the right type of devices will help yield the necessary RoI.
  • Intelligent Buildings: There are opportunities with intelligent buildings but the real question is where those opportunities are. New construction tends to be the best opportunity for IoT solutions because building owners seemed to be reluctant in adopting IoT in retrofits. Another issue impacting the commercial building market is the economic health of the vertical. Some regions are growing stronger while others lag behind. This industry also has various business models such as ESCO's who use innovative financing models for projects that are based on the actual energy cost savings. Understanding these models are crucial since it is more prevalent in the market and it will have an impact on how IoT solutions go to market in this space.
  • Smart Grid/Energy: With so much turmoil in the geopolitical landscape, energy is becoming more important with business leaders and politicians. The smart grid provides various opportunities for IoT solutions but the biggest barrier has always been who is going to pay for it. Another challenge for companies is where they should participate in the market.
  • Industrial: Industrial is the most fragmented segment of the market. It also provides the most opportunities for IoT solutions. Each sector within industrial has its own ecosystem and key companies that dominate a segment of the market. This segment also has various protocols and devices that can be connected either wired or wireless. As this market begins to upgrade older technologies, it is expected to be one the strongest verticals for growth and finding the right industry within industrial is key.
