Compassion Canada Celebrates 90,000 Children Sponsored

Child-focused charity partners with churches in the developing world to fight poverty

LONDON, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 1, 2012) - This week, child sponsorship charity Compassion Canada passed a milestone in its fight against poverty: Canadians now sponsor more than 90,000 children living in poverty overseas.

President and CEO Barry Slauenwhite says, "We are tremendously grateful for our supporters. Their generosity is transforming the lives of tens of thousands of children and their families in the developing world."

Slauenwhite marked 29 years with Compassion on Oct. 17. He says the charity is growing at an unprecedented rate, and attributes the increase in sponsorships to its unique child development model and bold Christian identity.

Compassion works exclusively with churches overseas to bring practical and spiritual care to children living in poverty. Sponsorship funds benefit individual children directly through their local churches, where they participate in age-appropriate activities, receive health check-ups, learn valuable life skills and hear about God's love for them in the gospel. Compassion selects church partners with a history of serving the most vulnerable children and families, and equips them with resources to meet children's needs - physical, mental, social and spiritual.

In addition to sponsorship, Compassion offers donors a chance to support

  • vulnerable moms and babies, through the Child Survival Program
  • young adults who have graduated from sponsorship and want to attend university, through the Leadership Development Program
  • communities with urgent needs, such as clean water or HIV and AIDS initiatives

And at Christmas, Compassion offers a unique gift guide full of meaningful gifts Compassion families have requested, such as solar lighting, bunk beds, a swing set and drivers ed for dads in Tamil Nadu, India. The gift guide is available on Compassion's website, at
