Compete Ranking of Top 50 Web Sites for October 2010 Shows a Top-Five Showdown Is Coming

Bing.com, the Only Double-Digit Riser (13.55 Percent), Gained Ground on Number Five Wikipedia.org; Google and Facebook Cede More Ground to All Others in Top 10

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - December 6, 2010) - Compete, a Kantar Media company, today released its ranking of the top 50 web sites for October 2010. The monthly data show recent trends that could ultimately lead to noteworthy changes within the top five, which now consists of Google.com, Yahoo.com, Facebook.com, YouTube.com and Wikipedia.org.

Compete's month-over-month and year-over-year top 50 data revealed the following:

  • Facebook.com could ultimately overtake Yahoo.com in 2011 if it continues its current trajectory; its 2.09 percent monthly increase bolstered its 21.74 percent yearly gain. Meanwhile, Yahoo.com saw a modest 0.62 percent gain and has increased only 0.10 percent over the year. As of October, just over 3 million UVs separate the two domains.
  • Bing.com once again saw healthy growth for the month, increasing 13.55 percent for October, bringing its total yearly increase to 134.58 percent -- by far the largest yearly mover among the top 50 domains. Now all that separates Bing.com from the number five spot in the top 50, occupied by Wikipedia.org in October, are 58,017 UVs.
  • Among the notable decliners for the month -- all of which are also down for the year -- were Craigslist.com (-1.56 percent for October/-6.95 percent for the year), CNN.com (-4.3 percent for October/-18.4 percent for the year) and the still falling MySpace.com, which lost another 2.39 percent in October and is now down 20.5 percent for the year.
