Compete Releases Search Market Share for December 2010

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - February 7, 2011) -  Compete, a Kantar Media company, today released its search market share data for December 2010 based on data from the company's panel of more than two million US-based internet users. December search activity across the five leading engines was up 1.3 percent in overall query volume from November and both Bing and Yahoo! continued to gain search market share.

Among notable findings for December:

  • Bing Powered engines (including both Bing and Yahoo!) as a whole grew 4.1 percent M-O-M in query volume, driving its total market share up by 0.8 percentage points. Total search market share for Bing Powered engines was 29.8 percent.
  • Bing and Yahoo! each held 14.9 percent of the total search market share in December and the two engines had nearly identical query volumes for the month.
  • Bing experienced the highest M-O-M query volume increase of 4.7 percent.
  • Google saw its query volume rise in December with a 0.2 percent M-O-M increase. In addition, Google's web engine experienced a 4.8 percent increase in unique visitors for the month.
  • Bing also gained more unique visitors, with a 5 percent M-O-M increase.
