BEHCHOKO, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES--(Marketwired - July 4, 2016) -
Modern and up-to-date community infrastructure helps ensure that Canadians live the quality of life that they want and expect. Aimed at improving municipal water systems and providing better community services, two such infrastructure improvement projects have recently been completed in Behchokö.
The first - an improved water treatment plant - involved the installation of a wood pellet boiler heating system. Not only will the new heating system have long-term health benefits for the residents by providing a cleaner energy source for the area, it will also reduce Behchokö's operating and maintenance costs.
Behchokö is also benefitting from a new community office, located in the Khon Go Cho Complex. The new administrative space includes a large boardroom, five offices, and a public reception area. The 445.9 square-meter community office is now better positioned to support the delivery of services to the residents and to promote economic growth that will help the middle class grow and prosper.
"By working in partnership with every order of government to strengthen communities in the North, we are improving key municipal services and providing residents with safer, more suitable facilities. I am proud to celebrate the completion of these important infrastructure projects, which in total benefited from approximately $2 million in federal funding."
The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities
"I am proud of the collaborative work that has led to the completion of these important public infrastructure projects. The GNWT's ongoing partnership with the Government of Canada and all of the NWT's community governments demonstrates a joint commitment to making NWT communities safer and more sustainable."
Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs
"The Community Government of Behchokö is pleased to announce the completion of two significant capital projects in Behchokö. We are extremely proud of the new modernized administrative office, one that integrates our community administration with other community services which supports our vision to promote a strong and healthy recreation renewal in the community and region.
The upgrade to our water treatment plant has demonstrated the community's commitment to alternative environmentally clean energy sources. The Chief and Council would like to express their appreciation towards these federal investments in community infrastructure in Behchokö."
Clifford Daniels, Chief of the Community Government of Behchokö
