Con Edison Scores in Newsweek 'Green' Ranking

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - October 25, 2010) -  Con Edison, continuing to receive honors for its commitment to the environment, has been named by Newsweek magazine as one of the "greenest" utilities in the United States.

Con Edison had the second highest "Green Score" among utilities in the Newsweek rankings published in the Oct. 25 issue. The Green Scores were based on companies' policies, environmental impact and reputation. Con Edison finished first among utilities in the policy category, second in environmental impact and 12th in reputation.

Con Edison had the 31st highest Green Score among all large publicly traded companies in the United States.

Concern for the environment is woven into every decision Con Edison makes. The company reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 36 percent, or about 2.4 million tons, between 2005 and 2009, largely due to the use of cleaner-burning fuels and improvements at steam plants and substations.

The company also has been "greening" its fleet of vehicles. More than 40 percent of the company's vehicles use alternative-energy technology.

Con Edison offers a number of programs, including rebates for upgrades for energy-saving heating and cooling equipment, to encourage customers to use energy efficiently.

The company is running a pilot smart grid program in Queens to allow for real-time information exchange with customers, making those customers more aware of their energy consumption so that they can make adjustments.

The Carbon Disclosure Project recently named Con Edison first in its Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index among all S&P 500 companies and first among utilities in the new Carbon Performance Leadership Index. Con Edison is a Dow Jones Sustainability Index company, and also has been recognized for its environmental performance by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy and other organizations.
