Con-way Inc. Ranks in Top 100 on 2008 InformationWeek 500

Company Recognized for Technical Innovation Expected to Deliver $3 Million in Annual Savings

SAN MATEO, CA--(Marketwire - September 16, 2008) - Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) today announced that it ranked No. 72 on the 2008 InformationWeek 500, revealed last night at an awards ceremony during the InformationWeek 500 Conference at the St. Regis Resort in Monarch Beach, Calif. The company was awarded the ranking for its Step Saver Web-based dock management tool. Last year, Con-way ranked No. 1 for a project that dramatically improved the company's driver payroll system.

"Step Saver was a major initiative developed and implemented through the hard work of dozens of Con-way employees," said Jacquelyn Barretta, vice president and chief information officer, Con-way Inc. "Their efforts have resulted in significant cost and time savings and a very successful integration of innovative technology into Con-way's business processes. Being ranked 72nd on InformationWeek's prestigious list in recognition of those accomplishments is a tremendous honor for the entire team."

Step Saver is used in the nightly operations of Con-way Freight, the company's less-than-truckload transportation company and largest business unit. Based on a Web technology platform, Step Saver helps dock coordinators automate shipment traffic into, out of and across the company's freight loading docks in the most efficient and productive manner possible. Previously, these employees spent hours manually planning the sequencing and positioning of trailers at dock doors as trucks arrived at the company's Freight Assembly Centers (FACs), where freight is sorted, loaded, routed and dispatched to its next destination. Step Saver's "Optimizer" function uses a mathematical model to plot the most efficient door assignments based on the latest shipment and volume information available. It's proven to be a tremendous productivity tool for the more than 100 employees using the program at the company's 75 major FACs nationwide. Benefits of the technology have already included a 21 percent reduction in forklift usage, as well as a 5.6 percent increase in pounds worked per man-hour, which translates to a savings projection of approximately $3 million per year upon full implementation.

"For 20 years, the InformationWeek 500 has honored the most innovative users of business technology," said InformationWeek Editor in Chief Rob Preston. "Year after year, InformationWeek 500 companies harness technology to improve efficiency, boost productivity, drive revenue and establish a competitive advantage. We applaud this year's winners, and the CIOs and other executives whose ingenuity and risk taking are at the center of business technology innovation."

InformationWeek has identified and honored the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual listing, now in its 20th year, and has tracked the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America's best-known companies. The list is unique among corporate rankings because it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
